It is important to discuss a budget with your partner and parents and come to an amicable agreement.

Remember although this is a very special day you don't want anyone going into too much debt over the occasion. Today, more often then not, the bride and groom’s parents share the costs. The bride and groom also offer financial assistance, especially now as couples are often already living together, even to the point of preferring to shoulder most of the costs themselves. The bride and bride’s family traditionally cover the engagement party, reception costs, flowers for the reception, stationery, photography, transport, groom’s wedding band and wedding gift and of course the wedding dress and accessories and those of the bridesmaids. The groom and the groom’s family traditionally cover alcohol at the reception, flowers for the bridal party, bride’s ring and wedding present, clothes and accessories for the groom and groomsmen, clergyman’s fees, rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon.

If you are on a tight budget, try not to focus on the minor details, work out what is most important to you and allocate your budget accordingly and sensibly. Spend time shopping around as you'll be surprised at the variety in costs for many aspects of your wedding. Speak to suppliers about your budget as more often than not they will be happy to work with your budget or if not, refer you to someone who can.
