In its early days, the hinterland area was a successful timber region. Its Cedar, Beech and Hoop Pine trees provided wood for furniture and construction both locally in south-east Queensland and exported to the United Kingdom. Once cleared, the rich red volcanic soil from ancient lava flows gave birth to a dairy farming industry that supported the surrounding district for many years.
